superior quality of raw material used and the exquisite gold and silver zari work
inspired by the Mughal period. The weavers of Indian Banarasi sarees took
inspiration for designs from Mughal and Persian paisley and floral motifs. The
Banarasi style emphasizes on beautiful floral designs such as Jasmine, emeralds,
marigold flower, Betel nut leaf, stripes, and manjo flower motifs etc. It takes
almost 15 days to 6 months to complete a saree depending on the complexities of
the design and the intricate detailed work on the border and pallu.
Woven with organic raw silk, the Banarasi Saree is
embroidered with golden threads that cover the saree and its elaborate border.
The motif design on borders and pallus is not an easy task, these traditional
designs are first drawn on wax papers. The other artisans design punch cards
for that pattern which are then placed into the machine to guide the thread to
obtain a specific pattern. This is a very time consuming process and then each
card corresponds to a single line of weaving and multitudes of these punch
cards are placed in a succession to obtain the desired motifs in a sequence of
patterns. Thread making is also an elaborate process. Original silver in its
original form is first melted and transformed to fine threads as thin as a
strand of hair. And at last, this is further flattened and wrapped around a
silk thread which is passed through an electroplating solution to obtain gold
yarns.
Saree is the national Indian drape worn by women taking into
consideration Indian values, ethics, values and tradition. Bollywood has played
